The Politics of the American Founding

The quote I chose is James Madison's quote from Federalist NO.10. He says "Extend the sphere and you take in a greater variety of parties and interests; you make it less probable that a majority of the whole will have a common motive to invade the rights of other citizens; or if such a common motive exists, it will be more difficult for all who feel it to discover their own strength, and to act in unison with each other".

In this quote Madison argues that in a larger population it is harder for a group to dominate. When he says "Extend the sphere and you take in a greater variety of parties and interests" he means that when there is more people there is more interests and much more different ideas. And so this means that no one group will have the majority and take over or violate the rights of any person, and that there should be a balance. He also says that even if there is a majority it will be hard for them to see themselves as the stronger group and so everyone will work together.

I chose this quote because I think it is very important to understand it and this is how it should be today. There shouldn't be a dominant group because that will cause problems and people will be violated. I think that there is somewhat of an unbalance that occurs today, because the rich are being treated better than the poor. There is no balance between the two. It sometimes even feels like that the rich have more rights than the poor.
